Paradise Sunset Bungalows, Lamen Bay, Epi Island
Address: Lamen Bay, Epi Island view mapLamen Bay is expansive and is a favoured anchorage for yachties due to its calm waters. Up to 25 boats can be in the Bay in the months of June to October; all glittering under the setting sun.
The highlight of your stay is to snorkel with the resident friendly dugong and turtles. The chiefs of Epi Island imposed a 'tabu' on the hunting of dugongs, hence they are increasingly frequenting the area. Snorkelling equipment is supplied, but it's best to bring your own. There are numerous other activities such as trips to nearby Lamen and Lopevi Islands. Waterfalls, subsistence gardens, fishing for the exquisite 'poulet' fish found at 200 to 300 metre depths.
All bungalows face Lamen Bay and the extraordinary sunsets. Lighting is by a small generator from 6pm to 9pm after which, solar energy kicks in. If you don't want to be woken up at 4am by the free ranging roosters, we suggest you bring ear plugs.
The shared facilities block is a little 'rustic' but satisfactory. The cook, Silvana, is a kind and outgoing NiVanuatu woman who speaks French. Bar selection is limited to local beer, soft drinks and wine by the glass. Taso, the owner is upgrading his restaurant with a better kitchen, much to Silvana's joy.
