Vanuatu Accommodation The Melanesian Port Vila Hotel, Port Vila, Efate Island Sustainability

Hiro Osuka, Managing Director

The Melanesian Port Vila in its early days was known as the Windsor Hotel International and in even earlier times, as the Solaise Hotel.

Over the recent years, The Melanesian has evolved significantly and has become a well established property catering for both tourists and corporate clients alike that require a quality city based hotel, as opposed to a beach resort.

The property reflects the culture and spirit of Vanuatu. Thus ensuring guests have an opportunity to experience at least a small part of Vanuatu's well known hospitality during their stay at the hotel.

The Melanesian Hotel has also encouraged personal accountability and responsibility within the staff creating a team culture where the individual is highly motivated and recognized for their work and loyalty.

Caring for destination

This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.

Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:

Energy-saving keys for the hotel, and using solar-water heating.

Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:

At the Melanesian Port Vila Hotel we are committed to energy conservation.  Unfortunately, all of Vanuatu's power comes from diesel generators, with diesel being brought over regularly by ships.  We understand that our guests wish to minimise the energy they consume and any adverse impacts on the environment, which is why we have developed initiatives to lessen energy usage.  Our methods include employing a system of energy-saving keys for the hotel, and using solar-water heating.  Have a better holiday knowing that you are staying with a hotel concerned about the environment.
