Vanuatu History, Cannibalism & Tradition...the beginning
Vanuatu History, Cannibalism & Tradition…the beginning.
Amongst all high chiefs in Vanuatu, Chief Virembat and the Amok people on Malekula island occupy a paradoxical place. Virembat reign over his people is considered as particularly fearsome, over fellow Malekula inhabitants, but maintained good relationships with journalists as well as with British and French residents. Popular for their big-seized penis holster, the Big Nambas have been long considered as one of the most primitive people, and one of the most cannibalistic of the archipelago.
The Big Nambas geographic isolation (the Northwest Malekula plateau) is hardly accessible, the coast is highly inhospitable, even the endemic coconut palms do not grow in this area, and water is rare. Their long resistance to Christianity and colonial administration is well known. More images in our image library.
